Ian, don't have the book in front of me now, but almost all carbs will have the float level with the gasket flange when the level is correct. If it is still running rich after working on the carb, diassemble and verify the pilot passages above the air jets are clear. Jets in the fuel control fuel quantity and any above the fuel control are air bleeds to lean the fuel mixture. Any that are plugged will cause rich running. Also the choke or cold starting rich circuit and idle mixture adjustment will seem to be ineffective if the pilot jet air bleed is plugged. Use carb cleaner, and compressed air (while proctecting your eyes and face) to clean them, no carb cleaner use lacquer thinner. If you have a smoker friend, have them blow smoke through the passages with a aerosol plastic tube to verify they are open. Max
